Dr. Katherine Phillips

Dr. Katherine Phillips received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, her dental degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, and her Master of Science degree in Orofacial Pain from the University of Southern California’s Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry. Following graduation from UDM in 2008, she practiced general dentistry for a short period before joining a practice dedicated solely to treating Sleep Disordered Breathing & TMD in December of 2008. Dr. Phillips was the Dental Director of that practice, which allowed her to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea, snoring, orofacial pain, and temporomandibular joint disorders.

Dr. Phillips is Board Certified in two specialties. She became a Diplomate on the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine in 2010 and a Diplomate on the American Board of Orofacial Pain in 2020. She currently serves as the President of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) Board of Directors, was a member of the Annual Meeting Committee for the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) from 2014-2016, has facilitated courses to teach the principles of Dental Sleep Medicine, served as Chair of the Introduction to Dental Sleep Medicine Course offered by the AADSM, participated in the Consensus Committee to develop a formal definition for an Oral Appliance, is a co-writer of the accompanying support paper, has lectured to multiple sleep physicians and led in a Dental Sleep Medicine shadowing program for Sleep Physician Fellows at Northwestern University, the University of Chicago in Chicago, IL and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.

As a Board Certified Orofacial Pain Specialist and a Board Certified Sleep Dentist, Dr. Phillips has focused the scope of her practice on treating sleep breathing disorders (OSA and snoring) and TMD for the last 12 years. She has treated thousands of patients and delivered over 5000 appliances. Working together with the patient’s sleep physician, she can effectively treat patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea and those patients that are non-compliant or intolerant to CPAP. Dr. Phillips lectures nationally regarding Mandibular Advancement Devices and combination therapy and shares credit in writing the formal definition of an Effective Oral Appliance published in the Journal of Dental Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Phillips says, “There is a direct relationship between sleep-disordered breathing, TMD, and chronic pain disorders. Working within this field allows me to work with patients, their physicians, and general dentists in a collaborative environment and provide patient-centered care. Helping my patients by relieving their pain, addressing headaches, and improving sleep quality is my primary goal.”

In her free time, Dr. Phillips enjoys spending time with her husband, Jon, and their two fur babies, Mia and Abby, traveling to any place with a beach and visiting her family in Michigan.
